Know About the Attraction

One of the most fascinating things about the Sagrada Familia is that it has been under construction for over 100 years.

Its estimated completion is in 2026, which will mark 100 years since Gaudi’s death.

  • Francisco Paulda del Villar initially planned the church, but he resigned a year later, leading to Antoni Gaudi taking over, who radically changed the plans.
  • Gaudi, being the visionary he was, designed the church so that future architects could understand and carry on his work.
He made models of the Glory Facade for future reference.
  • The Sagrada Familia was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. This status was bestowed on it due to its unique architecture and design.
  • Sagrada Familia has undergone several changes in its religious nature.
It was initially a Roman Catholic Church, then designated a cathedral. Finally, Pope Benedict XVI consecrated it as a basilica in 2010.

Visitors to Sagrada Familia must adhere to a modest dress code, covering shoulders and knees.

Tops should not be low-cut or sleeveless, and shorts or skirts should reach at least mid-thigh length.

vacatis insider Tips
  • If you are visiting during peak seasons, reach the Sagrada Familia at least two hours before it opens to avoid crowds and long wait times.
  • Reaching earlier helps you stay ahead of the crowds, and you can click pictures outside without other tourists photobombing you.
  • The inside of Sagrada Familia is stunning, with beautiful light from stained glass windows. A guided tour can help you enter quickly and learn more.
  • Visit on a sunny day around noon for the best lighting inside. The stained glass windows create beautiful light displays.
  • Visit the Sagrada Familia at night to explore the stunning lightning and illumination and capture its beauty with your camera.
  • Get combo tickets to explore two city attractions, or choose bundle tickets or city passes to explore the top-rated attractions in Barcelone at a lower price.
  • If you want to explore the city later, carry a scarf or a shawl to cover your shoulders and knees and do not restrict yourself to the Sagrada Familia dress code.
  •  If visiting the towers, note that you’ll take an elevator up but must walk down a narrow, winding staircase with about 400 steps.
  •  Read about Sagrada Familia beforehand to better appreciate its history and architecture.
  • Be aware of unauthorized ticket sellers outside the Basilica who scam visitors with fake and overpriced tickets.
  • Despite the security presence, watch out for pickpockets inside and outside the ticketed areas.
